Surely you’ve heard of the cold brew phenomenon at this point, but maybe you’re not quite sure how it works? Here is a little 101 course.

What Exactly Is Cold Brew?

Although this is the most common way, pouring hot water over ground beans is not the only way to make coffee!

It is also possible to obtain excellent coffee with cold water! Or at room temperature, it depends.

The only difference is the weather! Instead of brewing in seconds/minutes, cold brew takes longer… Much longer in fact. This is the biggest difference: you have to do it in advance.

Is Coffee Much Different?

More and more people swear by cold brew coffee, and for good reason! Cold brew coffee is more than half as acidic as regular coffee, because cold brew prevents most of the oils in coffee beans from being released.

The coffee is therefore not only smoother, smoother and more balanced , but it also contains more distinctive and typical coffee bean aromas (and different depending on the variety), for example fruity, chocolate, nutty flavors, etc. .

Longer Storage

While traditional coffee can only keep for a few hours, cold-brewed coffee is still just as good for days… It can easily be stored in the fridge for more than two weeks, or even up to a month in some cases!

This coffee can also be used for cooking or for making ice cubes.

Just For Iced Coffee?

Of course, cold brew coffee is completely perfect for making iced coffee! But not only. Once it has been infused like this, it can very well be reheated and drunk hot. Any technique works: reheating the mug in the microwave or in a pan on the stove, for example.

How Do You Make Cold Brew Coffee?

There are different methods but the easiest one requires only a wide mouth mason jar and a sieve!

You can allow about ¼ cup of ground coffee per cup of coffee. Which means 1 cup of coffee beans for a 4-cup mason jar. We pour coffee first, then water, and close the pot tightly. It is then kept in the fridge until it is time to filter it.

You can then filter everything through a very fine sieve, if possible covered with a paper coffee filter or even a cheesecloth.

How Long To Infuse?

It usually takes at least 12 hours to make cold brew coffee, but you can also keep the brew for up to 24 hours . The longer the brewing time, the stronger and more concentrated the coffee will be, much like syrup. It is always possible to dilute a coffee that is a little too strong, either with water or milk (cow or vegetable)!

The best is to do some experiments and tests; the happy medium would probably be 18 hours of brewing . The cold brew coffee you buy at Starbucks, for comparison, is brewed for 20 hours.

Iced coffee is one where the infusion is prepared with hot water and then poured over the ice to cool it quickly.
